Dealing
with Damage
The
more shows you attend, the greater the chances for loss or
damage to your exhibit properties. But what do you do when
the worst happens and something is damaged in your exhibitand
you suspect the culprit is the general contractor? Follow
these steps to protect yourself.
- Read
the liability information provided by the general contractor
in your show kit. This details the terms under which the
contractor accepts liability as well as the limits of how
much they will pay (by weight, per piece and total claim).
Every contractor is different so read the information carefully.
- As
soon as you discover the damage, go straight to the exhibitor
service desk, and ask to speak to the person in charge.
Explain the situation in as much detail as possible (what
happened and when, extent of damage, names of any witnesses).
Then ask what recourse is available to you.
- You
might do some sleuthing on your own. Ask your neighbors
if they saw or heard anything.
- If
the contractor refuses to take responsibility, try pursuing
your claim with show management. They have more leverage
with the contractor and might argue your case for you, especially
if you are a valued exhibitor. Prepare a detailed written
complaint to give show management some perspective on the
situation.
- Litigation
is absolutely the last resort. For anything under $1,000,
its not worth the time or trouble.
